Bopara’s Blistering Century Propels England to Victory
LEEDS: England Champions delivered a dominant display, ousting India Champions from the World Championship of Legends (WCL) with a thrilling 23-run victory at Headingley, Leeds, on Sunday. Ravi Bopara’s explosive, undefeated century and Ajmal Shahzad’s penetrative bowling were instrumental in the win.
India’s captain, Yuvraj Singh, chose to field after winning the toss, a decision that ultimately backfired as England amassed a formidable 223/3 in their 20 overs, setting India a steep target.
Bopara was the star, smashing an unbeaten 110 off just 55 balls, including eight massive sixes and eight fours. His innings showcased masterful aggression, maintaining a healthy run rate throughout.
Ian Bell provided solid support with 54 off 36 deliveries, hitting six boundaries and a pair of sixes. Moeen Ali contributed a rapid 33 from 13 balls, while Samit Patel added 20 runs from nine balls.
Harbhajan Singh was the pick of the Indian bowlers, claiming 3/18 in his three overs, while Varun Aaron secured 1/34.
In pursuit of a challenging 224, India Champions put up a spirited fight but fell short, ending at 200/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Yusuf Pathan led the scoring with a vibrant 52 off 29 balls, featuring two sixes and six fours. Captain Yuvraj Singh added 38 runs from 27 balls, while Stuart Binny (35) and Ambati Rayudu (28) attempted to keep their team in contention. However, consistent wickets impeded their progress.
Ajmal Shahzad significantly shifted the momentum in England’s favor with an outstanding bowling performance, taking 4/31 in his four overs. Stuart Meaker claimed two wickets, and Ravi Bopara and Ryan Sidebottom each took one.
