England Announces Playing XI for First Test Against India
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) declared their lineup on Wednesday for the first Test against India, a five-match series set to begin Friday at Headingley in Leeds.
The squad includes the comeback of seasoned bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes, whose last Test appearance was in December 2024 versus New Zealand.
Woakes, 36, was sidelined for England’s previous two Tests due to an ankle injury but participated in a two-match series for England Lions against India A.
Brydon Carse is also returning to the team following recovery from a foot ailment. He is set to play his first Test against India, having previously competed in New Zealand and Pakistan.
Carse expressed enthusiasm about his return, stating he felt assured opening the bowling during their recent home ODI series against West Indies.
The right-arm pacer also conveyed his readiness to take on the role in Test matches if the opportunity arises.
Carse’s Comments
“I’m looking forward to that chance, if that’s what’s in store,” Carse mentioned. “I began the bowling in the one-day series versus West Indies and felt good. It’s something I’m excited about if that chance comes.”
The pair are replacing Sam Cook and Gus Atkinson, who were part of the England team for their series against Zimbabwe.
In another key decision, England has chosen Ollie Pope, the vice-captain, for the number three position over Jacob Bethell, despite Pope’s perceived weakness higher up the batting order.
