Raducanu to Clash with Anisimova, Wimbledon Finalist, in Canadian Open’s Third Round

MONTREAL: Emma Raducanu, the British tennis star, is advancing impressively toward the US Open. She secured a straight-sets victory against American player Peyton Stearns with a score of 6-2, 6-4. This win secures her spot in the Canadian Open’s third round at Court Rogers on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old athlete, currently holding the World number 33 rank, exhibited a robust and comprehensive performance. This showing further solidifies her unblemished record when playing against Stearns, marking her third triumph in their encounters.

Raducanu is now preparing for a highly anticipated match with Amanda Anisimova, the Wimbledon runner-up, who previously triumphed over New Zealand’s Lulu Sun with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) earlier in the day.

Raducanu commenced the match assertively, seizing command of the initial set by executing two breaks against Stearns. She then secured the set on her sixth attempt.

The British player showcased accurate shot execution and composure from the baseline, effectively disrupting her opponent’s rhythm through strategically placed deep returns and skillful variations.

The second set was more dramatic, with Raducanu falling behind 4-2 after losing a break.

However, she demonstrated resilience, stringing together four successive games with aggressive return plays and confident service deliveries, ultimately concluding the match in one hour and 35 minutes.

Reflecting on her performance, Raducanu acknowledged a brief lapse in concentration but expressed satisfaction in regaining control.

“I’m really happy with how I navigated that match. I momentarily lost some focus in the second set, which she capitalized on. I’m very pleased to have won against a strong opponent and excited to extend my time in Montreal,” Raducanu commented.

Acknowledging the support from the crowd, Raducanu added, “I spotted the Union Jack during critical moments. As someone born in Canada, it means a great deal to me to perform well here.”
