Ahead of upcoming assembly and by-elections, the Election Commission has issued strict directives to ensure essential facilities are available at every polling booth across the country. The commission’s primary goal is to create a conducive environment for voters to exercise their right to franchise without any impediments. This initiative aims to prioritize voter convenience and accessibility, making the electoral process smoother for everyone involved.

A total of 2,18,807 polling booths will be established nationwide, and the Election Commission has mandated that each must provide fundamental amenities. These include access to clean drinking water, shaded waiting areas, clean restrooms, adequate lighting, and ramps for individuals with disabilities. The commission emphasizes that these arrangements are crucial for facilitating a comfortable voting experience.

Further instructions detail the need for clear signage and well-organized voting rooms at each polling station to prevent voter confusion. Provisions for seating arrangements have also been requested to offer relief to elderly citizens and other voters standing in queues. Four standard ‘Voter Facilitation Posters’ will be displayed at every booth, containing vital information about the voting process, candidate lists, required identification, and the code of conduct.

To assist voters directly, the Election Commission has ordered the establishment of Voter Assistance Centers at each polling station. Staff will be available at these centers to guide voters in locating their assigned booth and verifying their registration in the voter list, with clear directional markers to aid navigation. Additionally, arrangements for depositing mobile phones at the entrance of polling centers will be made to maintain the integrity and order of the voting process.

The commission stressed that strict adherence to all these directives is paramount, with officials instructed to complete all preparations before polling day. The overarching objective is to ensure that the voting process is easy, secure, and pleasant for every citizen participating in the elections. These measures reflect a commitment to enhancing voter turnout and the overall quality of the electoral exercise.
