Earthquake Shakes Quetta and Vicinity

A seismic event measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale was felt in Quetta and its surrounding areas on Sunday evening, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre.

The quake’s point of origin was located approximately 65 kilometers to the west of Quetta, registering at a depth of 25km.

At present, there have been no reports of casualties or damage to properties.

This seismic activity follows a 3.2 magnitude earthquake that impacted Karachi’s Malir district four days prior.

The region, encompassing Pakistan and Afghanistan, has experienced frequent seismic disturbances in recent years. Records indicate heightened activity in neighboring countries situated at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.

In the preceding month, a substantial magnitude 6 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, resulting in over 2,200 fatalities and numerous injuries.

Following that event, tremors were felt across various regions of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Mardan, Chitral, Murree and adjacent areas. Reports indicated that the effects extended as far as Lahore, causing widespread concern and prompting residents to evacuate their homes.
