Du Plessis Discusses Next Title Defense with UFC
UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis addressed speculation about a potential injury on Thursday, clarifying that an announcement regarding his next title defense is forthcoming.
Du Plessis refuted reports of a shin injury and also stated that a June 28 date for his next fight had not been officially confirmed.
“Everyone has shared their opinions, rumors, and stories regarding a shin break and injuries. I found it quite amusing, but unfortunately, none of it is accurate,” Du Plessis posted on Instagram on Thursday.
“The UFC and I have already discussed a potential fight date and opponent. The June fight was never finalized, and I didn’t withdraw from any bout. As the champion, I dictate when I fight. Contenders simply need to be ready when called upon. Fight announcement coming soon, so stay tuned.”
In his most recent fight in February, Du Plessis triumphed over Sean Strickland in their UFC 312 rematch. The South African fighter secured a unanimous decision victory, following a fourth-round submission win against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305.
Du Plessis’s post hinted at potential contenders for his next fight, with Khamzat Chimaev and Caio Borralho being likely candidates.
Chimaev boasts an unblemished record of 14 professional wins, while Borralho is currently riding a 17-fight winning streak.
