Ishaq Dar Advocates for Enhanced UN-OIC Cooperation
UNITED NATIONS: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar has emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The goal is to foster peace, combat the surge in religious prejudice, and champion the rights of marginalized communities globally.
Speaking as the President of the UN Security Council, Dar articulated Pakistan’s position during a dedicated briefing on “Cooperation between the United Nations and regional and sub-regional organizations in maintaining international peace and security: Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)”.
He characterized the OIC as an essential link uniting global and regional initiatives, harmonizing strategic objectives with vital humanitarian assistance.
He highlighted that the OIC is distinguished not only by its extensive membership but also by its well-defined principles, which include upholding sovereignty, promoting human dignity, and ensuring justice.
“The OIC’s credibility stems from its broad and diverse membership and its commitment to justice, protecting human dignity, respecting national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and promoting solidarity,” he emphasized.
Dar cautioned against the escalating danger of extremism and Islamophobia, asserting that such animosity contradicts the essence of the UN Charter. He underscored the critical necessity for international cooperation to address this concerning trend.
“Religious hatred is morally unacceptable and undermines the very foundation of the UN Charter,” he stated.
He also lauded the OIC’s enduring dedication to the Palestinian cause and the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and demanded an end to India’s prolonged occupation.
The minister further acknowledged the OIC’s constructive involvement in supporting peace initiatives in Libya, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, the Sahel region, and beyond.
He urged for a cessation of what he referred to as India’s unlawful occupation of Kashmir and reiterated Pakistan’s backing for self-determination in both regions.
The Deputy Prime Minister welcomed the Security Council’s agreement on a Presidential Statement, expressing that it would reinforce connections between the UN and the OIC and bolster their collaborative endeavors in conflict-affected areas from Libya to the Sahel.
