The Congress party launched a sharp critique against the Narendra Modi administration on Wednesday, accusing the government of systematically silencing dissent by blocking social media accounts and digital platforms. During a press conference at the party headquarters, leaders alleged that the state is targeting creators who highlight public grievances and government failures. These actions are being described as a direct assault on the fundamental right to freedom of expression in the country’s digital space.
Supriya Shrinate, who heads the party’s social media wing, pointed to a wave of account suspensions on X that occurred early in the morning. She claimed these accounts were primarily involved in raising awareness about societal issues and criticizing official policies. The party highlighted that while traditional media has largely been brought under state influence, the government is now aggressively moving to control the last remaining space for public questioning on the internet.
Specific instances of censorship were cited, including the repeated suspension of independent YouTube channels and the targeting of Instagram creators. The opposition also referenced an order given to a prominent magazine to remove a cover image that was critical of the Prime Minister. According to the party, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the IT Ministry are actively dictating what content is allowed to remain online through direct official intervention.
The leadership further claimed that this crackdown is a reaction to growing international and domestic scrutiny over the government’s performance. They mentioned that several high-profile figures linked to the administration have faced allegations in global controversies, and the state is eager to prevent these discussions from gaining traction. Shrinate noted that she personally received multiple notifications from platforms indicating government requests to restrict content.
This escalation in digital censorship comes at a time when the opposition is increasingly relying on independent online voices to bypass mainstream narratives. As the government continues to enforce strict IT regulations, the Congress party maintains that these measures are designed to shield the leadership from accountability. The party vowed to continue challenging these restrictions, asserting that the public’s right to ask questions cannot be permanently suppressed by administrative orders.
