Hyderabad Reels Under Torrential Rains: Casualties and Disruption Reported

Heavy rainfall in Hyderabad and its surrounding regions on Monday resulted in at least three fatalities and injuries to three individuals. The intense downpour led to urban flooding and widespread disturbances across the area.

Deputy Commissioner Zainul Abideen stated that an unexpected cloudburst brought substantial rainfall for over an hour and a half, impacting areas such as Latifabad, Qasimabad, and Tandojam. This deluge caused streets and residential areas to become inundated with several feet of water.

Floodwaters infiltrated homes and medical facilities, placing a burden on emergency response teams. In Latifabad, the accumulation of water beneath a railway bridge severed the connection between Hyderabad and Qasimabad.

Furthermore, approximately 350 electricity feeders in the HESCO region experienced outages, causing widespread power disruptions and hindering water drainage operations.

The Deputy Commissioner mentioned that a warning had been disseminated, and efforts were in progress to utilize pumping stations to remove water from the affected zones.

Instructions were given to the Irrigation Department to lower the water level in the Phuleli Canal to facilitate drainage. He noted that generators are being employed to pump water due to the power failures.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported rainfall measurements of 53mm in urban locations and 50mm at the airport.

In Tando Allahyar, intense rainfall coupled with strong winds led to water entering residences in low-lying areas. Residents encountered difficulties due to persistent water accumulation in various neighborhoods.

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah addressed the situation and spoke with Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Shoro. A spokesperson mentioned that the Chief Minister mandated immediate actions for rainwater drainage and directed the provincial energy minister to collaborate with HESCO to restore power to the pumping stations.

Mayor Shoro informed the Chief Minister that several areas remained flooded because of the tripped power feeders, which delayed the drainage process.
