The Sindh government has given in-principle approval to an ambitious plan worth up to Rs100 billion aimed at transforming Civil Hospital Karachi into a state-of-the-art healthcare facility.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, where officials outlined a comprehensive strategy to modernize one of the province’s oldest and busiest public hospitals. The initiative reflects a major push to upgrade healthcare infrastructure in Karachi and improve medical services for millions of residents.
Under the proposed master plan, the hospital’s existing infrastructure will undergo a massive overhaul. The facility’s total area is expected to expand significantly, while its capacity will be enhanced with the addition of around 500 new beds to accommodate the growing number of patients.
A key component of the project includes the construction of modern medical and surgical towers, replacing outdated and deteriorating structures. Among the major developments is the planned establishment of a dedicated medical tower named after renowned humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi, symbolizing a blend of modern healthcare and public service legacy.
The revamp will also introduce several advanced facilities, including a new outpatient department (OPD), upgraded burns unit, specialized wards, a modern mortuary, and an improved waste management system. In addition, residential hostels for doctors and nurses, along with new administrative buildings, are part of the expansion plan.
Authorities have emphasized that while the hospital undergoes modernization, its historical identity will be preserved. Heritage structures within the premises will be restored to maintain their architectural and cultural significance.
To improve accessibility, surrounding roads will also be widened to facilitate smoother movement of ambulances and patients, addressing long-standing traffic challenges in the area.
A dedicated governing body comprising public and private sector experts is expected to oversee the project’s execution, ensuring transparency and efficiency in implementation.
The large-scale redevelopment is being seen as a transformative step for Karachi’s healthcare system, aiming to elevate Civil Hospital Karachi into a world-class medical institution capable of meeting future healthcare demands.
