Sindh Government Open to Dialogue on Canal Project Amid Tensions
Amid ongoing tensions surrounding the contentious canal initiative, the Sindh government has indicated its readiness to engage in discussions, as the matter is currently being reviewed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Rana Sanaullah, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on political affairs, stated that the prime minister will make a suitable decision regarding this issue. Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon emphasised that any forthcoming discussions would occur strictly at the government-to-government level.
Sanaullah affirmed that Sindh’s interests would be protected, ensuring that there is no intention to deprive Sindh of its water resources. He added that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is prepared for dialogue and that the federal government is addressing the matter with due seriousness.
The minister also sought to minimise the significance of recent statements made by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, suggesting they were made in the context of a passionate public address. He appealed for moderation in political rhetoric, reminding all parties to uphold mutual respect, stating that reactions to Bilawal’s remarks should be avoided and that all statements should be respectful.
Addressing issues related to PTI, Sanaullah criticised the opposition party’s conduct during visits to prisons, noting that only those listed should be present for meetings and objecting to the disruptive atmosphere created by others. He urged improved behaviour and cooperation with prison authorities.
Memon supported the federal government’s position on dialogue and reaffirmed the province’s concerns, emphasising that the canal issue is a matter of public interest in Sindh and that the Sindh government is advocating for its people.
Memon reported that concerns about the canal project have been voiced across numerous platforms. He welcomed discussions from the federal government, assuring that the PPP would advocate for the people of Sindh.
Continuing protests in Sindh are causing disturbances. Memon appealed to protesters to act responsibly, requesting that demonstrations be held in designated areas to avoid obstructing roads. He highlighted the disruption to the public, noting that vehicles transporting livestock are stalled and food is being spoiled due to blocked roads. He reiterated the right to protest but urged demonstrators to avoid causing harm to the public or blocking railway lines.
The Sindh government, he confirmed, is committed to resolving the issue through conversation, seeking to engage with demonstrators to prevent further escalation.
