Woakes Determined to Bat Despite Injury as England Eyes Series Victory

LONDON: Despite a suspected shoulder dislocation, England’s Chris Woakes is prepared to bat on the final day of the fifth Test against India, showcasing his commitment as the team aims for a significant series triumph.

Woakes sustained the injury while fielding during the opening day at The Oval and was initially sidelined for the remainder of the match. However, with England needing only 35 runs to secure a record chase of 374 and a 3-1 series victory, the 36-year-old is willing to bat at No. 11 if the situation demands on Monday.

Despite the injury setback, Woakes participated in a brief indoor net session on Sunday and even donned his match whites, signaling his readiness to contribute if required. England concluded day four at 339/6, positioned favorably for a memorable win.

Joe Root, who scored his 39th Test century earlier in the day, lauded Woakes’ dedication and resolve to support the team.

“He’s completely committed, like everyone else,” Root commented. “It’s been a series where players have had to push their limits. We hope it doesn’t come to that, but he’s prepared if needed. He’s eager to do whatever it takes.”

The full extent of Woakes’ injury is yet to be confirmed by England, but Root acknowledged the pacer remains in considerable pain.

“He’s clearly in significant discomfort, but it matters greatly to him,” Root added. “We’ve witnessed players like Pant bat with a broken foot and others endure hits throughout this series, highlighting the importance to everyone involved.”

Root praised Woakes’ character and selflessness, stating, “It exemplifies his character—willing to put his body on the line for England. We hope he won’t need to bat, but if it’s necessary, he’s ready to help us achieve victory.”

Reflecting on the series’ intensity and the final push, Root remarked: “It’s been an incredible journey over five Tests in six weeks. The belief within the team is strong—we believe we have what it takes to finish the job and claim the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.”

As England stands on the brink of securing a memorable Test victory, all eyes will be on The Oval as they resume play on Monday morning, aiming to chase down the remaining runs.
