Sinner Steps Down From US Open Mixed Doubles Due to Illness

Jannik Sinner’s coach, Darren Cahill, provided an update on the world number one’s condition, stating that he is expected to be ready to defend his US Open title. The coach’s remarks were made public on Wednesday.

Concerns arose about the Italian player’s participation in the year’s final Grand Slam after he withdrew from the Cincinnati Open final and also from the US Open mixed doubles competition.

Sinner previously missed three match opportunities against Alcaraz during the fourth set before experiencing a defeat. However, he rebounded at Wimbledon, defeating the Spaniard in four sets and ending his title hold.

Upon his return in Cincinnati, Sinner continued his strong play, progressing to another face-off with Alcaraz without losing a set.

Sinner is aiming for his third major title of 2025, following his victories at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The 24-year-old Italian tennis star pulled out of the US Open mixed doubles event, where he was scheduled to team up with Katerina Siniakova. This decision followed an illness that forced him to retire just five games into his Cincinnati final match against Carlos Alcaraz, who is ranked number two globally.

Cahill shared some insights on Sinner’s health, mentioning that he had spoken with him and that Sinner was feeling somewhat improved. The plan is for the player to rest and hopefully resume playing on the court soon.

“I spoke with him briefly last night. He was feeling a little better,” Cahill mentioned.

“The plan is rest, and I am hopeful that he will be able to get back on the court on Thursday and begin hitting some balls. We have confidence he’ll be fine.”

The US Open is scheduled from August 24 to September 7.
