PPP Leader Dismisses Rumors Regarding President Zardari’s Future
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari on Tuesday firmly refuted the ongoing speculations concerning President Asif Ali Zardari’s position as the head of the nation. He stated unequivocally that the government’s stability is contingent upon the PPP’s backing.
“The government’s effectiveness hinges on the PPP’s support. The reports against President Zardari are baseless,” Bukhari asserted.
This statement follows widespread reports hinting at a potential move to remove President Zardari from his role, along with suggestions of a forthcoming constitutional amendment.
These rumors gained traction after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) secured a clear majority in the National Assembly. This was facilitated by the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to restore reserved seats, prompted by a ruling from the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench.
This development also bolstered the ruling coalition’s position in the lower house, increasing their representation from 218 to 235 members, effectively granting them a two-thirds majority.
Addressing the conjectures surrounding President Zardari’s potential removal, Bukhari emphasized that those propagating such notions lack a proper understanding of the Constitution and relevant laws.
Furthermore, the PPP secretary general clarified that the party has no intentions of joining the federal cabinet.
The PPP leader’s denial mirrors a statement issued by PML-N’s Senator Irfan Siddiqui, who has also refuted claims about any plans to replace the president.
“No such proposal is being considered at any level,” Senator Siddiqui stated during a television appearance.
The senator highlighted that President Zardari is fulfilling his constitutional obligations effectively as the head of state, and he criticized specific media narratives.
Regarding the coalition dynamics, Siddiqui affirmed that the PPP remains an ally of the PML-N-led administration.
“Being part of the government does not mean we agree on every single issue,” he clarified.
Prior to these statements, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had also dismissed the reports suggesting President Zardari’s possible removal, describing them as mere social media rumors that should be disregarded.
“Some individuals are disturbed because, for the first time, politicians, the government, and the military establishment are united. These elements are disseminating misleading information,” Naqvi stated during a visit to Rohri on the occasion of Ashura.
