James Cook Becomes Seventh-Highest-Paid NFL Running Back
James Cook, the two-time Pro Bowl running back, has reportedly secured a four-year contract extension with the Buffalo Bills. The agreement is valued at $48 million, which includes $30 million in guaranteed money, according to international reports released on Wednesday.
This arrangement places Cook as the seventh-highest-paid running back in the National Football League, based on the average annual value of the new contract.
The announcement followed Cook’s decision to rejoin team practices, after he had previously communicated his intention to abstain due to considerations linked to his expiring contract.
Cook’s agent, Zac Hiller, stated, “James only wanted to be a Buffalo Bill. We appreciate the entire Bills organization and are happy we could finalize the deal.”
Buffalo’s head coach, Sean McDermott, had commented before Tuesday’s practice that discussions with Cook were progressing well, though he didn’t provide further details.
The 25-year-old Cook was a significant offensive force for the Bills in 2024, recording 16 rushing touchdowns and scoring in 12 of their 17 regular-season games.
Since joining the Bills in 2022, James Cook has made substantial contributions, amassing 2,638 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, in addition to 97 receptions for 883 yards across 49 games, with seven scores.
He was held out of last week’s preseason game, even though he was in uniform. In that game, the New York Giants defeated the Bills 34-25. Ray Davis and Ty Johnson took Cook’s place during the game. Frank Gore Jr. had 50 receiving yards from five catches, a team best, and 21 rushing yards.
