Henderson Poised to Join Brentford Following Ajax Departure
Jordan Henderson, the former Liverpool captain, is reportedly on the verge of joining Brentford after his exit from Ajax, according to reports on Friday. The 35-year-old English midfielder is preparing to make a return to the Premier League after the Dutch side agreed to terminate his contract a year ahead of schedule.
Despite interest from several top European clubs, Henderson has opted to sign a two-year contract with Brentford. The Bees were looking to reinforce their squad following the departure of their captain, Christian Norgaard, who moved to Arsenal.
During his time with Liverpool, which began in 2011, Henderson secured the Premier League title, along with the Champions League and FA Cup.
The midfielder, who has 84 caps for England, initially left Liverpool in 2023 to join Al-Ettifaq. However, his stint in Saudi Arabia was short-lived, and he returned to Europe to play for Ajax in January of the previous year.
The completion of the agreement is anticipated in the coming days.
Brentford is currently undergoing a rebuilding phase under the guidance of their new head coach, Keith Andrews, after Thomas Frank’s departure to Tottenham.
Henderson will be joining new acquisitions such as goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool, 20-year-old midfielder Antoni Milambo from Feyenoord, and Michael Kayode, whose loan from Fiorentina has been converted into a permanent transfer.
Henderson played in over 50 matches for Ajax. He departed the club after they narrowly missed out on securing the league title, with PSV Eindhoven claiming the championship on the final day of the 2024/25 season.
Although Henderson was not initially selected for England’s Euro 2024 squad, he was recalled by new manager Thomas Tuchel as part of the preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
