Blue Jays Secure Victory Against Yankees in Series Opener
TORONTO: In the first game of their four-game series, the Toronto Blue Jays triumphed over the New York Yankees with a score of 5-4 at Rogers Centre on Monday, thanks to a noteworthy effort from Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Guerrero’s two-RBI single played a vital role in the Blue Jays’ four-run sixth inning, propelling them to a victory and marking their fourth win in the last five games.
Brendon Little (4-1) earned the win despite conceding a run in his one inning of relief. Jeff Hoffman recorded his 19th save by pitching a scoreless ninth, allowing one hit and recording one strikeout.
For the Yankees, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run home run, while Cody Bellinger added a solo home run.
The Blue Jays recovered from a 3-1 deficit, scoring four runs in the sixth inning aided by a pair of errors, which pushed them ahead with a 5-3 lead.
Bellinger’s homer off Mason Fluharty in the eighth narrowed the gap to 5-4.
Making his second start since returning from an injury, Max Scherzer pitched five innings, yielding two runs on three hits and recording seven strikeouts.
Scherzer retired the initial nine batters he faced before Trent Grisham initiated the fourth with a single to left field.
During the fifth inning, Grisham had to exit the game due to tightness in his hamstring. Furthermore, Blue Jays’ shortstop Bo Bichette was sidelined due to discomfort in his right knee.
Yankees’ starting pitcher Carlos Rodón allowed five hits, two runs, issued three walks, and struck out four.
Kevin Gausman of the Blue Jays is slated to pitch against Max Fried of the Yankees in Tuesday’s Canada Day game.
