Stokes Unfazed by Bumrah Challenge Ahead of Test Series
LEEDS: England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes, has downplayed any apprehension surrounding India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, as they prepare for their five-match Test series.
Acknowledging that Bumrah may not participate in every Test to manage his workload, Stokes stressed that a series of this length cannot be determined by a single player’s performance.
Speaking to journalists before the opening Test at Headingley, the English captain recognized Bumrah’s abilities but restated the significance of a united team effort.
Stokes told reporters, “There’s no reason to be afraid. In international cricket, you are always facing high-quality opponents. We understand his capabilities and what he brings to any team, but fear is not a factor.”
He further commented, “I don’t believe that one bowler alone will secure the series victory for either side. All 11 players must contribute. Success isn’t dependent on a single individual in either team.”
Bumrah has previously found success in England, securing 37 wickets across nine Tests with an average of 26.27, including two instances of taking five wickets in a single innings. Overall, he has claimed 60 wickets against England in 14 Tests, averaging 22.16, with three five-wicket hauls.
In a recent interview, Bumrah mentioned his aim to play in three Tests during the England tour, with his availability subject to ongoing evaluation.
Bumrah stated, “[We will] adjust as we go. My aim is to participate in three Test matches. That number isn’t set in stone. The first [Test] is confirmed, and that is proceeding.”
He continued, “The rest will depend on the circumstances, workload, and prevailing conditions. I feel I can manage three Test matches currently, and I want to avoid a situation of desperation.”
Meanwhile, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revealed their starting XI for the series’ first Test, scheduled to begin Friday.
The lineup includes the comeback of seasoned bowling all-rounder Chris Woakes, who last played a Test against New Zealand in December 2024.
Woakes, 36, had been sidelined for England’s prior two Tests due to an ankle injury but has since regained fitness after playing for England Lions in a two-match series against India A.
England’s XI for the first Test against India:
