Aminul Islam Appointed BCB President

Former Test batsman Aminul Islam was chosen as president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Monday. After serving in an interim capacity, the 57-year-old, popularly known as “Bulbul,” secured the position without opposition for a four-year tenure.

Aminul, who led Bangladesh in their inaugural World Cup appearance in 1999, expressed his enthusiasm. “I have developed a deep passion for cricket development,” Aminul stated to the media.

Since retiring from his playing career, he has contributed his expertise to both the International Cricket Council and the Asian Cricket Council.

Having assumed the role of temporary president of the BCB in March 2025, his formal election to the position occurred on Monday. Additionally, former captains Faruque Ahmed and Sakhawat Hossain were also elected as vice presidents in an uncontested election.

“My initial plan was for a brief period,” Aminul added. “However, as I launched minor initiatives and witnessed positive results, I became increasingly committed and have continued to serve my country in this capacity.”

Cricket holds a significant place in Bangladesh, intertwined with the country’s political landscape. The sport has faced disruptions due to periods of unrest in the nation. Following the resignation of Nazmul Hassan, a close associate of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Faruque Ahmed initially stepped into the role of BCB president before it was eventually passed to Aminul Islam.
