Leadership Changes at Bangladesh Cricket Board
Former Bangladesh captain Aminul Islam has been chosen as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), succeeding Faruque Ahmed, according to reports from Bangladeshi media outlets on Friday. Faruque Ahmed’s removal led to this appointment.
Sources indicate that the decision to appoint Islam was finalized during an emergency meeting held at the BCB headquarters.
During the same meeting, board members Nazmul Abedeen Fahim and Fahim Sinha were appointed as vice presidents.
Reports further stated that the National Sports Council (NSC) nominated Aminul Islam as a Councillor on Thursday night, facilitating his appointment as BCB president.
The leadership restructuring occurred after the NSC revoked Faruque Ahmed’s membership, thereby ending his term as BCB president. This action followed a no-confidence vote from eight out of the nine BCB directors earlier in the day.
Despite the growing pressure, Faruque initially resisted the calls for his resignation.
Faruque stated, “I am not considering stepping down at this time. I have not been presented with a legitimate reason to do so. Why should I resign when others remain in their positions? I require a valid explanation. Moreover, I did not seek this position; I was selected. Therefore, I am entitled to know the reason for my potential resignation and what I am accused of.”
Later that evening, the Ministry of Youth and Sports officially validated the withdrawal of Faruque’s designation as the NSC’s representative on the BCB board.
The ministry cited the no-confidence letter and the findings from a fact-finding committee regarding issues related to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
The statement from Bangladesh’s sports ministry noted, “Considering the no-confidence letter from eight BCB directors against Faruque Ahmed, and the report from the fact-finding committee concerning the BPL, his nomination as the representative of the National Sports Council (sports ministry) has been revoked.”
