Miraz Doubtful for First Test Against Sri Lanka

The two-match Test series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is set to commence on June 17 in Galle.

Bangladesh’s all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz may be unavailable for the opening Test versus Sri Lanka due to a bout of fever and general weakness, sources revealed on Monday.

Reports indicate that while Miraz is recovering from an infection, he is still experiencing fever and weakness, requiring continued medical supervision.

Despite favorable medical reports, Miraz did not participate in Bangladesh’s practice session in Galle on Monday in preparation for the Test match, citing persistent weakness and fever.

Bangladesh’s captain, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, told reporters in Galle on Monday that Miraz’s potential absence could negatively affect the team’s composition.

Shanto explained, “Miraz’s condition has improved, but he remains under observation. His participation is crucial for determining our lineup, as he is still unwell. His recovery will dictate how we structure the playing XI.”

The Bangladesh captain emphasized the significance of a strong start to the new ICC World Test Championship (2025–27) cycle, noting that previous successes in Sri Lanka could bolster the team’s confidence.

“It is vital to begin the WTC positively. Our preparations have been thorough, and we aim for a good start. Our positive experiences in Sri Lanka will be beneficial, but each series represents a fresh beginning.”
“A strong foundation from the top order is essential. We have a well-rounded squad, presenting a significant opportunity to achieve something remarkable here,” Shanto added.

He acknowledged the difficulties posed by Sri Lankan spinners in Galle but highlighted the typically favorable batting conditions during the initial days of a Test match at the venue.

“Facing spin is challenging here, but there are scoring opportunities early on. We aim to exploit those conditions. I am satisfied with the squad’s balance, offering options in both batting and bowling, allowing us to select the best XI based on the conditions. Effective execution of our plans is key,” he concluded.

The two-match Test series, scheduled from June 17 to 29 in Galle and Colombo, will mark the beginning of both teams’ World Test Championship (WTC) campaign.

Notably, this is Sri Lanka’s only home series until mid-2026, and Bangladesh’s only series in the next WTC cycle.

The team will also participate in a series against Ireland, which is not part of the WTC.

Following the Test matches, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will compete in a three-match ODI and T20I series.

The three ODIs, all day-night matches, are scheduled for July 2 to 8 in Khettarama and Pallekele.

The three-match T20I series will take place from July 10 to 16 in Pallekele, Dambulla, and Khettarama.
