Mehidy Hasan Miraz Appointed as Bangladesh ODI Captain
DHAKA: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially announced Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the 27-year-old all-rounder, as the captain of their national ODI team for the next year. This decision was made public on Thursday.
Miraz takes over the captaincy from Najmul Hossain Shanto and is set to commence his leadership with a three-match series in Sri Lanka scheduled for the coming month.
Upon being named captain, Miraz expressed that this appointment fulfills a lifelong ambition and represents a moment of immense pride for both him and his family.
He also conveyed his faith in the team’s capabilities, encouraging them to continue showcasing their dedication and passion while representing their nation.
Miraz stated, “Leading the national team is truly a dream realized. I am deeply grateful for the confidence the Board has shown in me. This is a moment of great pride for my family and me.”
“I have confidence in this squad; we possess the talent and determination to compete fearlessly. I want us to express our abilities confidently, remain dedicated, and always play with heart for Bangladesh.”
It is worth mentioning that Miraz has previously captained Bangladesh in four ODIs when Shanto was unavailable. He is also among a select group of Bangladeshi all-rounders, including Mohammad Rafique, Mashrafe Mortaza, and Shakib Al Hasan, who have achieved the milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in this format.
To date, he has participated in 105 ODIs for Bangladesh, accumulating 1617 runs and claiming 110 wickets. He currently holds the fourth position in the ICC Men’s ODI all-rounders rankings.
BCB Cricket Operations Committee Chairman Nazmul Abedeen highlighted Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s consistent performances as the primary reason for his selection as the ODI captain.
“Miraz has consistently performed well with both his batting and bowling, while bringing a combative attitude and positive spirit to the team. His displays, leadership qualities, and general maturity render him an appropriate choice to steer the team through this period of change within our ODI journey.”
“We acknowledge the positivity and character demonstrated by Shanto during his time as captain. He continues to be an important part of our leadership structure and a crucial member of the batting lineup.”
