Defence Minister Warns of Retaliation Against India Over Indus Waters Treaty
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif issued a strong warning on Friday, stating that Pakistan will respond forcefully if India constructs any structure on the Indus River that contravenes the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
Tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi have escalated following the April 22 attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which resulted in numerous fatalities.
Without presenting substantiating evidence, New Delhi implicated Islamabad in the assault, subsequently implementing a series of punitive measures aimed at downgrading diplomatic relations. These actions included the suspension of the IWT and the revocation of visas for Pakistani citizens.
In response, Islamabad has directed the expulsion of Indian diplomats and military advisors, nullified visas for Indian nationals, with exceptions for Sikh pilgrims, and closed a major border crossing from its side. Islamabad has also refuted involvement in the attack and proposed participating in a transparent and credible investigation.
During an appearance on a news program, the defence minister asserted that any attempt to build on the Indus River in violation of the IWT would be regarded as an act of aggression against Pakistan. He further stated, “If they attempt to build any kind of structure, we will strike it.”
He elaborated, “Aggression is not solely defined by the use of weapons; it encompasses various forms. One such form involves obstructing or redirecting water, which could potentially result in fatalities due to starvation and dehydration.”
The security official cautioned, “Should they undertake any architectural endeavor, Pakistan will dismantle that structure.”
“Currently, we are pursuing available avenues, commencing with the IWT. We are committed to addressing this issue thoroughly.”
The minister conveyed his belief that it would be challenging for New Delhi to contravene the IWT, adding that Islamabad intends to engage with relevant stakeholders regarding the unilateral suspension of the treaty by the Indian government.
The defence minister criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for allegedly orchestrating a “drama” to gain political advantage in anticipation of the forthcoming elections.
Answering a question, the minister noted a rise in international pressure on India. He added, “I cannot definitively state that the threat has been completely eliminated.”
The minister explained that New Delhi was unable to garner the expected international support and failed to provide evidence supporting its allegations. Asif further commented that the global community has dismissed Modi’s accusations against Pakistan.
Referring to India’s allegations against Pakistan, the minister said: “India is continuously inciting, but we will only take retaliatory action.”
