Nasir Iqbal Advances to Quarterfinals, Noor Zaman Exits

Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal secured his place in the quarterfinals of the Asian Individual Squash Championship after a challenging match against Hong Kong’s Lai Cheuk Nam in the Round of 16. However, compatriot Noor Zaman’s journey ended with a close defeat in his pre-quarterfinal.

Iqbal showcased both composure and aggression, defeating Lai in four games. He began strongly, winning the first game 11-7, but stumbled in the second, losing 2-11.

Displaying resilience, Iqbal recovered to take the following two games 11-5 and 11-8, thus sealing a 3-1 victory. His comeback after the second game proved vital in securing the match.

He is now set to face Henry Leung of Hong Kong in a highly anticipated quarterfinal showdown.

Meanwhile, Noor Zaman, the current World Under-23 champion, was knocked out after a five-game battle with Malaysia’s Joachim Chuah.

Struggling with a back spasm, Zaman conceded the first two games 3-11, 3-11. He then rallied impressively, winning the third game 11-3 and narrowly taking the fourth 12-10, forcing a decisive game.

However, Chuah regained momentum in the final game, dominating 11-2 to secure the match and bring Zaman’s campaign to a close.

The Asian Individual Squash Championship, showcasing top players from across Asia, will continue with quarterfinal matches on Thursday.

Nasir Iqbal now stands as Pakistan’s last competitor in the tournament, carrying the nation’s hopes into the later stages.

Following the singles competition, both athletes will turn their attention to the Asian Team Squash Championships, also scheduled in Kuching from June 23rd to 26th.

Pakistan has been placed in Group B, along with the Philippines, Singapore, and South Korea. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
