Shubman Gill a strong contender for T20 squad inclusion due to impressive form
MUMBAI: The selection of the squad for the forthcoming Asia Cup is anticipated to be revealed by the cricket board on August 19 or 20, various media outlets reported Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the selection committee and team management are in the process of carefully considering player fitness and recent performances to finalize the team.
The announcement of the squad will largely hinge on the fitness evaluations of all players. To ensure that the selected team consists of athletes who are fit and prepared, the cricket board has opted to gather these reports before making any formal announcement.
Reportedly, several notable players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, and KL Rahul, are expected to be absent from the Asia Cup squad. Meanwhile, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have reportedly clinched their spots on the team.
A key point of uncertainty is centered around Shubman Gill, the Test captain. While a definitive decision has not been reached, Gill’s outstanding performance in the recent Test series against England positions him as a strong candidate for consideration in the T20 squad.
Furthermore, the inclusion of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah in the squad is contingent upon his fitness level, heightening the anticipation surrounding the tournament.
Notably, the Asia Cup 2025 is set to commence on September 9 with a Group B match featuring Afghanistan and Hong Kong.
A total of eight teams, divided into two groups, will compete for the coveted title. Group A includes rivals Pakistan and India, along with UAE and Oman, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Hong Kong.
Pakistan is scheduled to begin its campaign against Oman on September 12, which will be followed by a high-profile match against India on September 14. Their concluding group-stage match is slated for September 17 against the UAE.
