Slot: Reds Aim to Compete for All Trophies
Arne Slot states that the substantial expectations at Liverpool will prevent any decline in the upcoming season, especially after their stylish Premier League title victory.
A dominant 5-1 triumph over Tottenham at a vibrant Anfield on Sunday ensured the Reds surpassed their closest competitor, Arsenal, with four matches remaining.
Liverpool now matches their long-time adversary, Manchester United, with 20 English top-flight titles, securing their second league title in the Premier League era.
This accomplishment is particularly noteworthy for Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp as manager last June. Few experts anticipated a league victory in his initial season.
Liverpool initiated the season strongly, suffering only two league defeats. Simultaneously, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal struggled to maintain consistent form.
Thousands of supporters remained outside Anfield for hours following Sunday’s final whistle, celebrating the club’s achievement with chants and fireworks.
Their emotions were amplified by the memory of their 2020 title, which was celebrated without fans due to Covid restrictions.
Arne Slot, who has smoothly adapted to life at Anfield, mentioned that preparations for the next season are underway, ensuring his team remains motivated as they pursue additional titles.
“I don’t need to manage expectations because the club’s expectations are invariably high,” stated the former Feyenoord manager, the first Dutch coach to secure a Premier League title.
“We must contend for every title, a goal that remained consistent upon my arrival and will persist next season.
“We possess a squad capable of winning, yet we are not alone. The league and Champions League feature numerous exceptional teams, ensuring a challenging path. Nevertheless, we are prepared to compete.”
Liverpool’s season concludes positively, contrasting with recent setbacks such as the League Cup final loss to Newcastle and Champions League elimination by Paris Saint-Germain.
For several months, the club was widely regarded as the likely Premier League champion; however, these defeats introduced a sense of disappointment.
During that period, the futures of leading scorer Mohamed Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk, and England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold remained uncertain, casting doubt on the club’s future.
Currently, Salah and Van Dijk have committed to new contracts, providing stability. However, Alexander-Arnold is still rumored to be considering a move to Real Madrid.
Arne Slot emphasized that the Premier League title was always the main objective.
“Although we felt significant disappointment after being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain, we believed there was a greater objective to attain,” he explained.
“Achieving this in the most competitive league globally, especially when winning is increasingly difficult, makes it truly remarkable.”
Next season may present even greater challenges.
The Dutch manager recognizes that Manchester City’s diminished performance this season benefited his squad. Additionally, Arsenal, who are likely to finish as runners-up for the third consecutive year, lacked consistency.
Liverpool supporters celebrating their title near Anfield’s towering stands feel their victory can serve as a catalyst for further achievements.
“Incredible,” remarked Alex Irlam, 23. “It’s unbelievable. This atmosphere is unique. Any Premier League club might win the league, but this experience is unmatched.”
“This echoes the era of (Bill) Shankly and (Bob) Paisley — Jurgen Klopp and Slot,” he added, referencing two of Liverpool’s most legendary managers who succeeded one another.
Sam Vickers, 23, urged the club’s leadership to provide financial support.
“The owners must support Liverpool FC with funds for player acquisitions,” he stated. “They must support us as a team and a club because we are the best globally.
“Witness these celebrations. You won’t find this at (Manchester) City, nor at Newcastle.”
Frank McShane, 74, a long-time Liverpool supporter, savored the celebrations both outside Anfield and throughout the city.
“The previous title was during Covid, making it anticlimactic,” he recalled, expressing his strong desire for Alexander-Arnold to remain.
“I anticipate another victory next season,” he predicted. “I hope Trent remains. Where else would he go? Why would he consider leaving?”
