Inflation Rate Dips in April 2025
The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reports that the Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation registered at 0.3% year-on-year (YoY) in April 2025. This is a notable decrease compared to the 0.7% recorded in the preceding month and the 17.3% reported in April 2024.
The average CPI for the initial ten months of fiscal year 2024-25 (July-April) was 4.73%. This is in contrast to the 25.97% observed during the corresponding period last year.
On a month-on-month (MoM) basis, there was a decline of 0.8% in April 2025. This contrasts with the 0.9% increase in the prior month and the 0.4% decrease in April 2024.
Urban and Rural CPI Inflation
Urban CPI inflation showed a decrease to 0.5% YoY in April 2025, down from 1.2% in March and 19.4% in April 2024. The MoM figure indicates a 0.7% decrease in April 2025, compared to a 0.8% increase previously and a 0.1% decrease in April 2024.
Rural CPI inflation experienced a 0.1% decrease YoY in April 2025, a shift from the previous month’s unchanged measurement and a significant drop from the 14.5% in April 2024. The MoM analysis reveals a 1.0% decrease in April 2025, as opposed to a 1.1% increase in the prior month and a 0.9% decrease in April 2024.
Sensitive and Wholesale Price Indices
The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) inflation on a YoY basis decreased by 3.2% in April 2025, compared to a 2.3% decrease the month before and a 21.6% decrease in April 2024. On a MoM basis, it decreased by 1.7% in April 2025 as compared to a decrease of 0.1% a month earlier and a decrease of 0.7% in April 2024.
The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation on a YoY basis showed a 2.2% decrease in April 2025, compared to a 1.6% decrease in the prior month and a 13.9% increase in April 2024. On a MoM basis, it decreased by 1.3% in April 2025 as compared to an increase of 0.3% in the previous month and a decrease of 0.7% in April 2024.
Non-Food Non-Energy Inflation
Non-food non-energy urban inflation decreased to 7.4% YoY in April 2025, from 8.2% the previous month and a 13.1% increase in April 2024. On a MoM basis, it increased by 1.3% in April 2025, compared to 0.5% in March and a 2.1% increase in April 2024.
The non-food non-energy rural sector saw a decrease to 9.0% YoY in April 2025, down from 10.2% the prior month and a 19.3% increase in April 2024. The MoM figures indicate a 0.9% increase in April 2025, compared to a 0.7% increase in the previous month and a 2.0% increase in April 2024.
Trimmed Mean Inflation
The 20% weighted trimmed mean for urban areas decreased to 3.8% YoY in April 2025, from 4.8% the previous month and 13.4% in April 2024. The MoM rate remained stable at 0.3% in April 2025, consistent with the previous month and an increase of 0.5% in April 2024.
The 20% weighted trimmed mean for rural areas decreased to 3.3% YoY in April 2025, compared to 4.8% the month prior and 15.0% in April 2024. On a MoM basis, there was a 0.1% decrease in April 2025, versus a 0.4% increase in the previous month and a 0.6% increase in April 2024. The National CPI for April 2025 decreased by 0.84% over March 2025 and increased by 0.28% over April 2024.
