Former president Arif Alvi has joined the increasing number of voices advocating for discussions, noting that he would be open to talks regarding upcoming elections.
During a private trip to the United States, he stated in an interview, “We will welcome it if dialogues are held about the next elections.”
Meanwhile, PTI leader Azam Swati voiced optimism about the potential for advancement in discussions with institutions. He proposed that progress in these discussions would be made after Alvi’s return.
Swati also revealed that, with the permission of party founder Imran Khan, he commenced communication with the establishment on Thursday and is scheduled to meet with a ‘special personality’ next Wednesday.
The PTI leader mentioned that after this meeting, he would be able to assess the extent of progress possible and determine the future course of action.
Swati conveyed to Imran that he, along with Dr. Alvi and others, would collaboratively initiate the negotiation process. He added, “I have sent a message to Dr Alvi indicating that I am meeting someone next Wednesday and I would like Alvi and other friends to join me.”
In the interview, Alvi also stressed that dialogue is also the solution for the Balochistan issue.
Alvi claimed that during the February 8, 2024, elections, his party, PTI, secured victory in Balochistan; however, their votes were undercounted. He contended that if the votes had been accurately tallied, PTI would have established governments in all provinces, including Balochistan.
The former president voiced concerns regarding the dissatisfaction among Balochistan’s youth, asserting that their concerns are not being addressed. He also criticised the employment of force to quell protests throughout the nation, asserting that such actions only intensify public resentment.
He further stated that the print, electronic, and social media platforms in Pakistan are not presently free, and the social media platform X is accessible only through a VPN.
