Nunez Joins Al-Hilal, Boosting Liverpool’s Summer Sales

Liverpool’s striker, Darwin Nunez, has officially signed with Al-Hilal, a Saudi Pro League team, on a three-year deal. The Premier League club made the announcement public on Saturday.

Reports from British media suggest the agreement involves a 53 million euros (£46.3m) fee in addition to potential add-ons. The specific financial details remain undisclosed.

The Anfield side released a statement on Saturday confirming the transfer and extending well wishes to the player.

“Liverpool FC confirms that Darwin Núñez has completed a permanent transfer to Al-Hilal, pending international clearance,” the statement read.

“The Uruguayan’s three-year stint with the Reds concludes following his move to the Saudi Pro League outfit today.

“Everyone associated with the club expresses their gratitude to Darwin for his contributions and extends best wishes to him and his family for the future.”

Nunez joined Liverpool from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for an initial price of £64 million. He recorded 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 appearances over three seasons with the Reds.

Last season, the striker faced challenges securing a regular spot in Liverpool’s first team during their title-winning campaign, starting only eight games and scoring five goals.

Darwin Nunez’s move is anticipated to help Liverpool approach the £200m mark in sales this summer, building on the previous transfers of Caoimhin Kelleher, Nat Phillips, Jarell Quansah, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, and Tyler Morton for a combined £146.5m.

Al-Hilal, led by former Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi, has emerged as a formidable force in Asia.

The Saudi Pro League team also distinguished itself as the first Asian club to defeat a Premier League team in an official match, accomplishing this against Manchester City at the Club World Cup last month.

Inzaghi’s squad aims to clinch a record-extending 20th league title this season, following their second-place finish in the Saudi Pro League the previous campaign.
