Agha Focuses on Team Goals, Denies ODI Captaincy Approach

KARACHI: Pakistan’s T20I captain, Salman Ali Agha, addressed the media on Monday, refuting claims that he is in line for the ODI captaincy. He clarified that no such offer or discussion has taken place.

During a press conference held during the ongoing white-ball and pre-Bangladesh series camp, Agha was questioned about his future as the T20I captain, given the recent changes in leadership with Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

The all-rounder avoided commenting on the removal of past captains, stating that it wasn’t his place to comment. He then confirmed that he had not been considered for the ODI captaincy.

“There were reports circulating that I was being considered for captaincy across all three formats. The media can speculate,” Agha stated lightheartedly.

“However, I have not had any conversations regarding the ODI captaincy thus far.”

“I don’t think I need to discuss what occurred with previous captains, as that’s not my concern. My focus is on how I can maximize the team’s potential. I prioritize decisions that benefit the Pakistan team, and that’s my sole objective.”

Salman Ali Agha also highlighted that Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi remain key members of the national team’s pool of 25 players for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled in India and Sri Lanka next year.

“We need to cultivate players who can step in at any moment, so we are developing our bench strength,” Agha explained.

“As part of our strategic planning for future assignments, we’ve identified a group of 25 players who will be actively involved with the team leading up to the T20 World Cup.”

“Shaheen Shah Afridi, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan are experienced players and remain an integral part of this group.”
