Haris Prioritizes National Duty Over League Opportunities
LAHORE: Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Haris has addressed his recent experience of going unselected in the Big Bash League (BBL) 15 draft. Despite registering for the event, he wasn’t picked by any of the franchises for the competition.
The rising top-order batsman was among the numerous Pakistani players hoping to secure a spot in the BBL, where a handful ultimately succeeded in joining various teams.
During a press interaction, Haris acknowledged the appeal of prominent leagues, but reaffirmed his dedication to representing his country.
“The Big Bash League is a highly regarded tournament, and I extend my best wishes to all participants. However, my primary focus is fulfilling my national duties. Opportunities in leagues will arise in the future, and I will consider participating when I am completely available and prepared,” Haris commented.
The wicketkeeper-batsman also provided insights into his current objectives and long-term aspirations while participating in the skills enhancement camp organized by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
He emphasized that the sessions have been valuable for improving individual abilities and refining team strategies.
“This skills camp is proving to be beneficial for identifying and rectifying our shortcomings. We are concentrating on the areas highlighted by the coaching staff and diligently working to improve both individually and as a team,” he stated.
The 24-year-old underlined his personal dedication to development and adaptability.
“I am working diligently to improve my understanding of the game. Every cricketer needs to assess the match situation and react appropriately, and I am focused on developing this aspect further,” he added.
“Currently, my objective is to refine my defensive technique, which is vital across all formats.”
Haris also recognized the importance of evolving into a more complete batsman.
“I am known for my ability to hit boundaries, but modern cricket requires a comprehensive skillset. I am now focusing on rotating the strike, working on singles and doubles, to achieve greater consistency,” he explained.
Regarding the possibility of captaincy, Haris maintained a focused and pragmatic perspective.
“I have no aspirations for captaincy. I prefer to concentrate on my individual performance and fulfill my designated role within the team,” he clarified. “The previous series demonstrated the improvements in my game awareness, and I aim to build upon that.”
Notably, Haris also conveyed a strong ambition to secure a place in Pakistan’s Test squad.
“I have experience playing first-class cricket in the domestic circuit, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Looking ahead, I aspire to perform well and earn a spot in the national Test team.”
Reflecting on the nature of the current camp, he highlighted its distinct approach compared to previous sessions due to its targeted focus.
“Each camp has a unique structure, but this one specifically addresses players’ weaknesses, particularly in areas such as bat speed and power-hitting, which are crucial in today’s game,” he concluded.
