Aaqib Javed Lauds Skills Development Camp, Updates on Players’ Fitness
LAHORE: Aaqib Javed, Director of the High Performance Centre, commended the recently concluded Skills Development Camp on Friday, asserting it effectively enhanced player performance and maintained their activity levels during the off-season.
During his address to the media at Gaddafi Stadium on the camp’s final day, Aaqib highlighted that the primary goal was ensuring players remained engaged and sharp outside of the regular cricket season.
He clarified that the camp’s short duration precluded complete correction of technical deficiencies; however, players received valuable guidance on areas needing improvement.
Camp Objectives
- Maintaining player engagement during the off-season
- Providing guidance on areas for improvement
“It’s unrealistic to rectify errors in just six or seven days, but we can certainly communicate expectations to the players. Our aim was to keep them active even when the regular season isn’t underway,” he explained.
Aaqib also discussed the participation of senior players such as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, noting they engaged actively in the camp and were provided with feedback to refine their skills.
“We engaged constructively with Babar and Rizwan, holding candid discussions about strategies to elevate their respective games,” he stated.
Update on Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim Jr.
Addressing the status of pacers Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim Jr., Aaqib confirmed their full recovery and consistent bowling activity throughout the camp.
“Naseem previously faced fitness challenges, but he is now bowling with consistency. The same progress is evident with Wasim,” he added.
ICC Test Championship Cycle
Looking forward to the upcoming ICC Test Championship cycle, Aaqib expressed confidence in Pakistan’s chances.
“We are well-positioned in this new cycle. Every team leverages home conditions, and we intend to maximize our advantage,” he remarked.
He cautioned against underestimating teams like Bangladesh and West Indies, recognizing their strength in their respective home environments.
“No team can be taken lightly. Bangladesh is formidable at home, and we are preparing for all scenarios, including matches against the West Indies. Both ODI and T20 players will participate in the next camp, and squad selection will align with the final decision on the West Indies series.”
Regarding major upcoming tournaments such as the 2025 Asia Cup and the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup, both scheduled in Asia, Aaqib emphasized the necessity of achieving high-scoring performances.
“We need to consistently score above 200 runs. Whether selecting a young talent or a seasoned player, we will prioritize the best available option for Pakistan. Conditions will be uniform for all teams, so we must prepare strategically and make judicious selections accordingly,” he concluded.
