Aaqib Clarifies Team Inclusion Policy, Open to All Cricketers Including Babar
LAHORE: Aaqib Javed, the director of the national high-performance centre, addressed speculations on Monday regarding Babar Azam’s supposed exclusion from the T20 team. He asserted that the selection process is performance-based, allowing any player, including Babar, to regain their spot on the squad.
During a press conference held at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, Aaqib emphasized that the national team welcomes all cricketers, and Babar is no exception.
“The opportunity to compete is available to everyone, be it Babar or another athlete. Should Babar, or anyone else, exhibit strong performances, they will secure their position. Performance is the key to advancement,” he stated.
Aaqib further commented on the players’ understanding of their ideal formats and the obstacles they encounter.
“Players possess an understanding of their best-suited format. They are confronted with several challenges that demand preparation,” he added.
Aaqib voiced optimism for Pakistan’s showing in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle and conveyed confidence in the team’s prospects.
“If progress is maintained, Pakistan holds substantial promise in this Test championship cycle. Pakistan will likely demonstrate a formidable presence,” he remarked.
He predicted tangible improvements in cricket outcomes within the next half-year.
“In the coming six months, expect noticeable progress and transformations across all echelons. Modifications will be implemented within the system, affecting both male and female cricketers.
“We aim to reinstate developmental initiatives in the academies, as we have done historically. The establishment of a biomechanics lab is underway, alongside upgrades to all existing facilities,” he explained.
Aaqib also mentioned upcoming white-ball and red-ball training camps scheduled for July, aimed at preparing for the Test series against South Africa.
“Coach Mike Hesson sees value in collaborating with this broader pool of talent. A white-ball camp will also take place in July, integrating white-ball cricketers into this extensive camp.
“Following the larger assembly, dedicated camps for white-ball and red-ball formats will be organized. The red-ball camp will specifically aid preparations for the series against South Africa,” he said.
The former fast bowler also announced the development of a high-performance centre for women at the Karachi academy, and other training locations in various cities to accommodate players across various age categories.
“The Karachi academy will house a women’s high-performance centre. The Sialkot academy will concentrate on Under-13 players, Faisalabad on Under-17, and Multan on Under-19. The National Cricket Academy will oversee national-level players,” he concluded.
