The Punjab government has allocated 86 electric buses to Faisalabad Urban Transport, aiming to enhance public transportation services in the city. Of these, 33 buses are expected to arrive soon and will operate across six different routes. This initiative is distinct from the planned metro bus service for Faisalabad.

Faisalabad Development Authority (FDA) Director General Muhammad Asif Chaudhry shared these developments during a session with representatives from the business community and real estate sector at the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He discussed FDA’s ongoing projects, jurisdiction, and various civic issues impacting the city.

Chaudhry also provided updates on the Faisalabad Master Plan, currently under court proceedings, and the implementation of the Peri-Urban Structure Plan. This plan includes zoning regulations to manage urban development and mandates environmental impact assessments for new constructions and housing colonies, successfully reducing brownfield areas by 30,000 acres.

Furthermore, outline development plans for 125 cities, including Faisalabad, have been prepared at the provincial level. Chaudhry clarified that while the FDA executes development schemes under the deposit work mechanism, maintenance and repair responsibilities fall under the Municipal Corporation or other relevant bodies.

This allocation of electric buses aligns with Punjab’s broader efforts to introduce eco-friendly transportation solutions across the province. For instance, Lahore recently launched a pilot project featuring 27 electric buses, aiming to reduce pollution and operational costs. These buses operate on a 21 km route from Green Town to the Lahore Railway Station, benefiting approximately 17,000 commuters daily.

Similarly, the provincial cabinet approved an e-bus service scheme for Punjab, with plans to have 680 electric buses operational across the province by the end of the current year.

These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing public transportation infrastructure and promoting sustainable urban mobility solutions in Punjab.
