Zverev Clinches Third Munich Title, Matching Kohlschreiber’s Record

MUNICH: Alexander Zverev, the world’s number three ranked player, celebrated his birthday in style by securing a comfortable victory against American Ben Shelton in the Munich Open final on Sunday, claiming his third title at the event to equal a long-standing record.

The 28-year-old German, a crowd favorite, showcased a steady performance to defeat second seed Shelton with a score of 6-2, 6-4. This win marks his 24th career tour title and his first victory of the current season.

Having previously won the tournament in 2017 and 2018, Zverev now shares the record for the most Munich titles with fellow German player Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Supported enthusiastically by the home crowd, the top-seeded Zverev dominated the 22-year-old Shelton, securing an early break to establish control. He won the first set convincingly with a score of 6-2 and continued his momentum by breaking Shelton’s serve again at the start of the second set.

“I was aware that I needed to perform at my highest level today, as Ben has been playing exceptionally well throughout the week,” Zverev commented.

“The conditions here really suit his style of play; it’s very warm and the court is quick. To be fair, they suit my game as well. I’ve been enjoying my birthday so far.”

Zverev concluded the tournament, which was making its debut as an ATP 500 event, by becoming the first German player to lift the upgraded trophy, achieving his sixth career title on German soil.
