Brown: Verstappen’s Talent is Extraordinary
McLaren CEO Zak Brown has expressed concern over the possibility of Max Verstappen transferring from Red Bull to Mercedes, acknowledging the move as potentially ‘scary.’ This statement comes amidst growing speculation that the multiple-time champion might consider switching teams due to reported tensions within his current racing organization.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff voiced his interest in recruiting Verstappen during the Austrian Grand Prix. He has since confirmed ongoing discussions aimed at potentially acquiring the Dutch driver from Red Bull Racing.
Verstappen’s existing contract with Red Bull extends until the close of 2028. However, reports suggest he is uneasy with performance-based clauses that could allow for an early departure if he doesn’t maintain a top-three position in the championship standings by the mid-season break.
Brown, whose McLaren team is showcasing impressive performance under the present regulations, admits that a Mercedes team featuring Verstappen could pose a significant challenge.
“That’s a bit scary,” Brown commented.
“I think Mercedes is clearly on a forward trajectory, Red Bull clearly is not at the moment, and Max is an unbelievable talent.
“So Max in a Mercedes — that’s some pretty serious competition.”
Mercedes could represent an ideal destination for Verstappen, especially given their promising trajectory under the updated Formula 1 regulations slated for 2026.
Meanwhile, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are demonstrating strong performance and have secured long-term contracts with McLaren. Brown has affirmed that there are no intentions to pursue Verstappen, even if he becomes available.
“No, I couldn’t be happier with our driver lineup,” Brown stated.
“I’ve said it from day one that I think we have the best driver lineup in Formula 1 — I think sitting here right now it would be difficult to argue that factually it’s statistically true.
“And because of the characters they are the talent they are on the track off the track I wouldn’t trade our two drivers for any other drivers on the grid.”
