Yeray Alvarez Attributes Failed Doping Test to Hair Loss Medication

Athletic Bilbao player Yeray Alvarez addressed the reason behind his positive doping test on Thursday, stating it stemmed from the use of medicine for hair loss treatment.

Alvarez faced suspension following a doping violation after the match against Manchester United in the Europa League.

The Spanish player acknowledged the positive test after Bilbao’s 3-0 defeat at home during the UEFA competition’s semi-finals in May; his team also suffered a 4-1 loss in the return match.

It’s worth noting that the defender previously received a testicular cancer diagnosis in 2016 and was already using medication to treat alopecia.

Alvarez posted on social media that the positive result was due to unintentionally using medication aimed at preventing hair loss.

He further stated that he is working with his club to defend himself and anticipates a swift return.

Alvarez explained, “Following a review of the situation, it was determined that the positive test was a result of unknowingly taking a hair loss medication containing a prohibited substance.”

“The disciplinary procedure is ongoing and confidential, resulting in my provisional suspension and preventing me from making additional statements to the public.”

“I sincerely regret this situation and, with the club’s assistance, I am focused on my defense, hoping for a quick return to playing.”

The club is providing support to Alvarez, who progressed through their youth system and has participated in 257 matches across all competitions for the first team.
