Switzerland Secures Historic Spot in Women’s Euros Quarter-Finals
GENEVA: At Stade de Genève on Thursday, the Swiss women’s national team achieved a historic milestone by advancing to the Women’s Euros quarter-finals for the first time ever.
Riola Xhemaili’s dramatic goal in the 92nd minute against Finland resulted in a 1-1 draw, enabling Switzerland to qualify based on goal difference. They finished second in Group A, trailing Norway.
Following her crucial goal, Xhemaili expressed her excitement, calling the moment historic.
“This is a historic moment for all of Switzerland. We are demonstrating to the world what the Swiss are capable of… it’s truly magical,” Xhemaili stated.
Swiss captain Lia Walti mentioned that the team was pleasantly amazed by the strong support and the unfolding circumstances.
“I don’t think any of us anticipated that things would unfold like this in Switzerland — sold-out stadiums… Everything is becoming much bigger than we ever imagined,” Walti commented.
The Stade de Genève recorded the highest attendance of the tournament thus far, with 26,388 spectators present on Thursday.
With the competition being held across eight cities and the final set for July 27, the Swiss organizers hope this success will further promote the expansion of women’s football in the nation, mirroring the impact of Euro 2022 on champions England.
After their debut in the 2017 Euros, the Swiss women’s team had previously never progressed beyond the group stage.
Their unprecedented achievement and the immense backing from local supporters signify a major advancement in the sport’s growth in Switzerland.
In the quarter-finals, Switzerland is scheduled to compete against Spain, the winners of Group B and current world champions.
