West Indies Announce Squad for ODI Series Against Ireland and England

The West Indies cricket board has revealed a largely consistent 15-member team for the forthcoming One Day International (ODI) series against Ireland and England.

A significant exclusion is Shimron Hetmyer, who is presently engaged in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Hetmyer was also absent during the 3-0 series victory against Bangladesh in December. Jewel Andrew, a wicketkeeper-batter, is set to rejoin the squad.

Shai Hope will continue to captain the team. Brandon King and Evin Lewis are anticipated to commence the innings as openers, with Keacy Carty expected to bat at the number three position.

Fast bowlers Shamar Joseph and Matthew Forde have overcome their respective injuries that kept them out of the Bangladesh series.

Amir Jangoo, following his impressive 79-ball century on debut in St Kitts, will be vying for a permanent position in the starting eleven.

The three-match ODI series versus Ireland is scheduled to commence on May 21 at Clontarf Cricket Club in Dublin.

The West Indies are currently ranked ninth in the ICC ODI standings and are aiming to automatically qualify for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, to be held in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The team concluded 2024 positively, securing series wins against both Bangladesh and England.

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy commented, “These matches are a vital part of our preparations for the 2027 World Cup. We are seeing signs of growing consistency within the team, highlighted by the series sweep against Bangladesh and the victory over England at the end of last year.”
He further stated, “We anticipate challenging conditions, but we are fostering a culture and mindset that prioritizes the type of cricket that will bring us closer to achieving our overarching goals.”

As part of organizational changes, former West Indies fast bowler Ravi Rampaul has been appointed as the bowling coach, succeeding James Franklin. In addition, former Ireland all-rounder Kevin O’Brien will be integrated into the coaching staff for the Ireland leg of the tour.

Following the Ireland series, the West Indies will proceed to England for another three-match ODI series, commencing at Edgbaston on May 29, followed by a three-match T20I series. The T20I squad is yet to be announced.
