Tierney Steps Down as WRU Chief Executive
Abi Tierney, the Chief Executive Officer of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), announced on Wednesday that she will be temporarily leaving her position to concentrate on cancer treatment following her diagnosis.
Tierney made history in 2024 by becoming the first female to hold the chief executive role at the WRU. She will be taking a leave of absence starting August 22nd to undergo medical treatment, and a specific return date has not been determined.
In a public statement, Tierney described her decision as difficult, emphasizing that her primary goal is a full recovery. She expressed her appreciation for the support she has received and voiced her faith in the capabilities of her colleagues.
“This was not an easy decision to make, but it is essential for me to prioritize my health and recovery,” Tierney stated.
“I am thankful for the encouragement from my family, friends, and coworkers, and I am confident that the team will continue our progress effectively in my absence. I would appreciate understanding and privacy during this period.”
Tierney’s departure occurs during a challenging period for Welsh rugby.
Notably, four professional teams, Cardiff Rugby, Scarlets, Ospreys, and Dragons, represent Wales in the United Rugby Championship.
A Welsh team has not secured a victory in the competition since 2016-17.
Additionally, Wales’ men’s national team has dropped out of the top 10 in global rankings after finishing last in this year’s Six Nations tournament, which resulted in coach Warren Gatland’s exit.
Richard Collier-Keywood, the Chair, will assume temporary overall responsibility for the governing body.
