Pipeline Rupture Causes Flooding at Karachi University

A significant pipeline breach in close proximity to the University of Karachi (KU) led to extensive flooding on the campus this past Tuesday. The incident necessitated an immediate response from the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).

The incident involved an 84-inch diameter supply line, designated as Siphon No. 19. The resultant flooding affected more than 50% of KU’s residential zones, with water entering numerous homes on the university grounds.

According to a KWSC statement, the pipeline failure could result in intermittent water supply disruptions for a number of localities throughout Karachi.

A KWSC representative indicated that the organization’s Chief Executive Officer, Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, took note of the situation and instructed teams to commence repairs without delay.

To safeguard those working on the repairs and promote effective operations, the water pressure within the damaged pipeline has been reduced temporarily. Comprehensive repair procedures have been set in motion, operating on a 24-hour basis.

The spokesperson further noted that the work is anticipated to take up to 96 hours to finalize. As a result, various areas of Karachi should expect some interruption to their water service during this period.

The localities facing potential interruptions encompass Chanesar Town, Jinnah Town, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Pak Colony, Golimar, Shershah, the Old City Area, Landhi, Korangi, in addition to PAF Base Masroor.

While Karachi generally receives around 650 million gallons of water daily (MGD), the repair work will lead to a drop of 250 MGD. Nevertheless, a supply of 400 MGD will be maintained.

The Water Board has issued a request for citizens to conserve water and store reserves where possible. Residents of the University of Karachi have also stated that electricity to the residential area has been suspended, which has required people to seek accommodation in guest facilities.
