Canadian Teenager Leaps in World Rankings After Victory
MONTREAL: In a stunning turn of events, Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko, who entered the tournament as a wildcard, pulled off a major upset at the Canadian Open on Thursday. She overcame four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka with a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, securing her first-ever WTA Tour title.
The 18-year-old Canadian had a shaky beginning, losing the first set 2-6 as Osaka took control early. However, Mboko showed resilience, gaining momentum in the second set and ultimately overpowering the Japanese star to clinch a career-defining victory.
Mboko’s journey to the title included impressive wins against notable players such as Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina. This victory will propel Mboko from 85th to 24th place in the global rankings.
Mboko described her recent experience as unbelievable, emphasizing the significance of competing in Montreal for the first time as a wildcard entrant.
Mboko’s Thoughts After the Win
“The last couple of weeks have been unbelievable. Receiving the opportunity to play here as a wildcard made me incredibly happy, especially since it was my first time competing in Montreal. I remember feeling anxious but also trying to soak in every moment,” Mboko stated.
She confessed that reaching the final, not to mention winning the title, was beyond her expectations. “After winning my first match, I was incredibly happy and satisfied. I never imagined that I would advance to the final or win the entire tournament,” she added.
“I am experiencing a whirlwind of emotions and am almost speechless. I want to express my gratitude to Naomi for an outstanding match,” Mboko expressed on the court earlier.
