Verstappen’s Potential Move to McLaren in 2026: Speculation Arises After Disappointing F1 Season

Following a challenging Formula 1 season for Max Verstappen with Red Bull, speculation is growing among experts regarding a potential transfer to McLaren in 2026.

In a recent discussion, F1 reporters Ewan Gale and Brandon Sutton shared insights into the Dutchman’s future, particularly after Red Bull’s underwhelming performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

The four-time world champion has previously suggested the possibility of departing from Red Bull. With Aston Martin reportedly prepared to make a substantial offer, Gale proposes that a move to McLaren could materialize for Verstappen instead.

Gale stated, “Aston Martin will possess a completely unique car next season, which is appealing—essentially a works team. This could attract Verstappen.”

He added, “Whether he evaluates the situation and decides against it, or whether Adrian [Newey] influences him, similar to Ross Brawn’s influence on Lewis [Hamilton] before 2014, it could sway him. The only other destination I envision for Max is McLaren. We know Zak Brown is receptive to a deal. Hypothetically, if Norris and Piastri are engaged in a fierce competition this season, could one of them be open to a change? Possibly.

That’s an unconventional idea, but I don’t believe Verstappen is limited to Aston Martin. Other opportunities could emerge, after all, this is F1.”

Brandon Sutton suggested that Red Bull should focus on retaining Verstappen, urging them to convince him to decline offers from other teams.

At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Max Verstappen was outperformed by Oscar Piastri and McLaren, finishing sixth despite starting seventh, which led to criticism.
