Vacherot Poised to Enter ATP Top 100 for First Time
SHANGHAI: In a remarkable turnaround at the Shanghai Masters final, Valentin Vacherot triumphed over his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech, securing his first ATP 1000 title on Sunday. After dropping the first set, Vacherot rallied to win with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The 26-year-old, who began the tournament ranked 204th, delivered eight aces and twelve winning shots throughout the two-hour, fourteen-minute contest.
This victory marks a historic moment, as he becomes the first player hailing from Monaco to clinch an ATP singles title.
Visibly moved, Vacherot shared a warm embrace with his older cousin, Rinderknech, aged 30.
Reflecting on his achievement, Vacherot expressed that the moment felt surreal and overwhelming, conveying his pride in both his performance and the groundbreaking nature of his win. He also voiced his appreciation to everyone who has backed him from the start of his journey.
“What just occurred feels unbelievable. I am still processing it all. This surpasses even my wildest dreams,” Vacherot remarked.
“I am incredibly pleased with my play over the last couple of weeks. My gratitude goes out to everyone who has aided my career from its inception.
While there must be one who loses, I believe there are two victors today. A family has emerged triumphant, and this narrative is remarkable for the sport of tennis, in my opinion.”
Vacherot is set to make his debut in the ATP top 100 rankings, a result of his exceptional showing. Meanwhile, Rinderknech, currently ranked 54th, is projected to ascend into the top 40 when the updated rankings are released on Monday.
