Tigers Maul Astros as Sweeney Shines with Homer, Triple
DETROIT: In a commanding display, Trey Sweeney propelled the Detroit Tigers to a 10-0 victory over the Houston Astros in their MLB season opener at Comerica Park on Monday. Sweeney’s performance was highlighted by a three-run homer, complementing Jack Flaherty’s exceptional seven innings on the mound.
Sweeney’s contributions included a triple, a homer, three RBIs, and two runs. Colt Keith racked up three hits, including a solo home run, while Riley Greene launched a two-run shot. Wenceel Perez also added a solo homer, and Kerry Carpenter drove in two with a triple as Detroit’s offense exploded.
Flaherty (7-12) dominated, recording nine strikeouts while conceding only three hits and one walk in his longest outing of the year. Despite Houston loading the bases early in the first inning, Flaherty escaped without allowing a run.
Astros’ pitcher Spencer Arrighetti (1-4) struggled, surrendering five runs on seven hits across five innings. Christian Walker had two of Houston’s five hits. Although Carlos Correa and Jose Altuve initiated potential rallies in the first inning, they were unable to convert.
Perez initiated the scoring in the fourth with a solo home run, becoming the ninth Tigers player to reach double-digit homers this season.
Detroit extended their lead in the fifth when Keith doubled, followed by Carpenter’s two-run triple, and Greene’s 29th homer.
Sweeney commenced the sixth with a triple and later scored, concluding his stellar night with a three-run homer in the seventh. Subsequently, Keith belted his second homer, solidifying Detroit’s decisive triumph.
