Rahim Achieves Milestone as Top Test Scorer for Bangladesh in Sri Lanka
GALLE: During the ongoing first Test match against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium, Bangladeshi wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim distinguished himself by achieving a notable record.
Rahim marked his 12th Test century, thereby becoming the most senior non-opening batsman to reach this milestone in Test cricket.
He surpassed the previous benchmark set by Pakistani icon Younis Khan, who had scored a century against Sri Lanka in 2015 at the age of 37 years and 216 days.
Rahim also moved past Mohammad Ashraful to secure the position of leading run-scorer for Bangladesh in Test matches held in Sri Lanka.
The seasoned batter demonstrated resilience with a score of 163 from 350 balls. This performance also earned him a unique global distinction, as he now holds the record for the most international runs (15,502) without having bowled a single delivery, exceeding former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who had totaled 15,461 runs across all formats.
Most International Runs Without Bowling a Delivery:
It’s worth noting that Rahim, together with Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das, collectively amassed 401 runs.
However, following a two-hour interruption due to rain, the match dynamics shifted dramatically, with Sri Lanka staging a strong recovery late on the second day.
Bangladesh concluded the day with a score of 484 for 9, having experienced a collapse during the final session. Sri Lanka seized five wickets, conceding only 61 runs in 20.4 overs, thus interrupting the momentum previously established by two significant partnerships — 264 runs between Shanto and Rahim, and 149 between Rahim and Litton.
Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed after scoring 148 from 279 balls, while Mushfiqur Rahim emerged as the highest scorer for Bangladesh in the initial Test with a remarkable 163 from 350 deliveries.
Litton Das, who was nearing a century, was dismissed for 90. Following his dismissal, Bangladesh faced a setback with the swift dismissals of Jaker Ali (8), Nayeem Hasan (11), and Taijul Islam (6).
Hasan Mahmud and Nahid Rana are scheduled to resume batting on the third day, with both yet to score.
