PSG Clinches Super Cup After Penalty Shootout Against Spurs
UDINE: Following a painful penalty shootout loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur’s coach, Thomas Frank, compared his team’s defeat to “an operation succeeded but the patient died.”
Spurs seemed headed for a victory, leading 2-0 with goals scored by central defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
However, PSG rallied late in the game, with substitute Lee Kang-in narrowing the score five minutes before the end. They then equalized and ultimately won 4-3 on penalties.
Reflecting on the loss, Frank stated that although his team implemented their strategy effectively, they fell short when it mattered most.
“In medical terms, the operation succeeded but the patient died. So, not that good in the end,” Frank commented.
“We developed a slightly different game plan and came very close to success. A 2-2 draw against PSG is a result you would accept. However, when it comes down to penalties, perhaps that’s the area we need to focus on to secure a final victory,” he added.
Frank also acknowledged PSG’s resilience and the dedication shown by his own players throughout the match.
“If you had suggested before the game that it would end in a draw and a penalty shootout loss, people would have found it quite impressive,” he mentioned.
“Considering the performance and the effort put in—it was remarkable. The mentality displayed throughout the game was impressive. There are many positives to take away,” he concluded.
