Bermudez, Women’s Under-23 Manager, to Succeed Tome

Following their defeat against England in the Euro 2025 final, Spain’s women’s team coach, Montse Tome, will vacate her position upon the expiration of her contract on August 31, as confirmed by the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Monday.

Sonia Bermudez, who currently manages the women’s Under-23 squad, has been designated as her replacement.

Tome’s tenure, which began less than two years prior, included a period as assistant coach to Jorge Vilda from 2018 until his removal in 2023.

Despite leading Spain to the European Championship final held in Switzerland last month, the RFEF opted not to extend Tome’s contract. Previously, she guided Spain to victory in the 2023-24 Nations League.

However, a subpar performance at the Paris Olympics, where the team did not secure a medal, coupled with the agonizing penalty shootout defeat at the Euros, diminished confidence in her leadership.

“The Board of Directors… expresses its gratitude to Montse Tome for her efforts, professionalism, and commitment demonstrated in various capacities during her involvement with the national teams at the RFEF, especially during her leadership as head coach of the senior women’s national team,” stated the RFEF.
