Misbah-ul-Haq a Leading Candidate for Test Head Coach
LAHORE: In a significant move reflecting an extensive restructuring of its cricketing framework, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly considering former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed for the Chief Selector position.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi convened a performance review session, which led to the resolution to dismiss the current mentors from their responsibilities.
Waqar Younis, Shoaib Malik, Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah-ul-Haq, and Sarfaraz Ahmed have been officially relieved of their mentoring roles.
Sources indicate that Misbah and Sarfaraz will continue their association with the PCB in crucial new roles, with details to be disclosed shortly.
An official announcement is anticipated in the coming days, though confirmation is pending.
Sarfaraz, 37, last played a Test match for Pakistan in 2023 and has an impressive international record across all formats.
The wicketkeeper-batter is celebrated for captaining Pakistan to victory in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, a notable achievement in Pakistani cricket history.
Following his brief mentorship, Sarfaraz is being considered for a more impactful position within the national structure.
PCB officials value his in-depth knowledge of the current player roster, many of whom he has played alongside, making him a potential asset in talent development and squad selection.
The PCB is currently implementing widespread changes, which include potential new captaincy appointments and a coaching staff reshuffle.
Former captain Misbah-ul-Haq is a leading candidate for the Test team’s head coach position.
Having previously served as both head coach and chief selector from 2019 to 2021, he is being seriously considered as part of Pakistan’s strategy to revitalize its red-ball performance.
Sources suggest that the PCB has initiated early preparations for the upcoming Test series. The appointment of a Test head coach is not expected immediately, as discussions are ongoing and several candidates are under review.
Mike Hesson, former captain of New Zealand, was recently named the new white-ball head coach for the national team.
Pakistan is scheduled to host South Africa in October for a series comprising two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is.
