Son Heung-min to Depart Tottenham After a Decade

SEOUL: Son Heung-min, the captain of Tottenham Hotspur, declared on Saturday his departure from the club this summer. This announcement concludes an impressive 10-year period with the Premier League team.

The South Korean international, who initially joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015 and has a contract extending to 2026, rose to prominence as one of the team’s most significant players. Recently, he led Spurs to secure their first major title in 17 years.

While Son has not yet revealed his future plans, various international media outlets suggest a potential move to Major League Soccer (MLS) with Los Angeles FC.

During a press conference held in Seoul prior to Tottenham’s pre-season match against Newcastle United, the 32-year-old shared that his choice to leave was the most challenging one he has faced in his career.

“My decision is to move on from the team this summer. It stands as one of the toughest choices I’ve had to make. I am very proud of my decade with the same team, and I believe I’ve always given my all to the club,” Son stated.

The Spurs captain also conveyed his sincere thanks to the club and its fans for their crucial role in developing his career.

“I always strived to perform my best, both on and off the field. After our Europa League victory, I felt I had accomplished everything I could here,” he remarked.

“This club has been instrumental in my growth, both as a player and as an individual. I am profoundly grateful.”
Over his ten years with the North London team, Son played in 454 games, scored 173 goals, and provided numerous assists.

In the 2021-22 season, he was awarded the Premier League Golden Boot. He remains a celebrated figure in Asian football within the league’s history.
